Thanks again to the Iowa State Patrol for providing an officer for the turn around. Unfortunately, did not really need him for the day since only one rider racing the clock. Thanks to Travis for placing signs and cones (no race today, saving the legs for tomorrow's state time trial championship race).

First off big Thanks to Tabitha for sitting in the buggy ole weeds
behind the stopwatch, and also to the ISP for sending out an officer to
keep us all safe at the turnaround. Thanks also to all the riders who
came out to play. Almost perfect conditions promised blazing fast
times and that is exactly what everyone laid down.
Heath Briggs 25:39
@ 23.39mph
Brian Gibson 27:42 @ 21.66mph
Ben Acree 26:29 @ 22.66mph
Eric Knox 26:00 @ 23.08mph
Travis Jass 23:11 @ 25.88 mph
Jay Kornder

Great times by all,
and I would be willing to bet that with the weather the way it was
tonight, these times are going to be the benchmark for some time to
come.
May 8th Results
Ok, not the most ideal conditions for a time trial, or riding your bike, or being outside for that matter. At 8am Saturday morning it was 37 degrees and there was a seriously strong Northwest wind, which was great for the 5 miles heading east on 10th Ave. , not so much for the return trip. Not sure if it was the cold, the early time or the wind, but the Terrible Ten was just that. Actually, the Terrible Ten name did not do this particular ride justice. Oh well, good training. Well, four die hard members made it out for the test of truth. Myself (Ben Acree), Craig Jarrard, Travis Jass & Eric Knox. Oh yeah, a big Thank You goes out to Tabitha, Raquel, Diane & Jessica (the wives) for allowing the aforementioned to sneak out of the house for an hour or so. Team member Heath Briggs did also show up, in his suburban. Not able to participate secondary to having a flu bug, but appreciate him for showing up to to check on things. Back to the results... Well, Travis once again took top honors, Nice Job!
Eric Knox 30:24 @ 20.71 mph (10.5 miles)
Craig Jarrard 34.01 @ 17.7 mph
Ben Acree 31.06 @ 20.1 mph (10.4 miles)
Travis Jass 27:24 @ 21.3 mph
Perspective Note -- Craig rode 24 miles in the wind and even colder morning hours before the time trial, did the time trial, then got a 4 mile run in. Craig, should have worn your new wet suit, would have kept you warm. Good job! You'll appreciate it come Hy-Vee Tri time. Well, that is a wrap for this windy May edition of the Terrible Ten.

A big THANK YOU to Travis Jass for being the brainchild and organizer for today's race and the upcoming series. Travis got the stop watches and cones, did the timing for the 5 participants today, measured the 5 mile out and back course and arranged the state trooper to be there. Again, Thanks Travis. Also, Thank you to Kelly Hindman for providing an Iowa State Trooper for monitoring traffic and the riders at the turn around. Everyone who participated had a great time and is looking forward already to next month to see how much they improve. Besides testing themselves on the course today, several of the participants did not know one another and now they do. Looks like we might have a few more from Fort Dodge going down to do the Hyvee Triathlon in June. Cool! Below is the official times and a brief note from Travis.
Thanks for all who came out, I hope everyone had as much fun as I did (Travis).
That is, of course, assuming you consider beating yourself up for 10
miles "fun". Great weather, hope we can replicate this every month,
maybe just a hair warmer though. Here are the full results in order of
take off. Still time for those who didn't make the 1st month to get in
on the action and be eligible for end of season prizes! I think my
math on the mph is correct but you may want to double check before
publishing on website.
Heath Briggs 27:32 @ 21.96 mph
Eric Knox 27:03 @ 22.20 mph
Craig Jarrard 28:56 @ 20.74 mph
Kit Hovey 29:17 @ 20.50 mph
Jay Kronder 26:00 @ 23.08 mph
Travis Jass 25:13 @ 23.79 mph
Just the facts mam...
Q: Is it a race?
A: Yes. No. Well, sorta. Riders will ride a ten
mile course as fast as they can. That is where the racing similarities
stop. The purpose is to improve on your time over the course of the
summer. So you will be racing, against yourself. If you slow down over
the course of the summer, you are missing the point.
Q: How will it be fair for everyone, not just the fast cats?
A: Think
of it this way, the fast cats probably ride and train year round. They
will maintain a higher level of fitness all year. That being said,
they won't be able to improve as much as say someone who hasn't been on
the bike much in April, but then gains fitness with lots of miles over
the summer. With age breakdown, and men's and womens catergories, and
time averaging, everyone has a chance of winning.
Q: How will times be averaged?/Wouldn't it benefit me to sandbag one month then leave a vapor trail the next?
A:
Conventional wisdom
says so, however with a math formula more complex than number of
decimal places in PI, holding back one month may actually be
detrimental to your overall average.
Q: What does "course open to traffic mean"?
A: It means
motor vehicle traffic on the road will be business as usual for a
Saturday morning.
There will be signs posted and other measures in place to keep riders
as safe as possible. We are expecting all riders to adhere to safe and
legal riding practices as well.
Q: Is drafting allowed?
A:
No. Must maintain distance between riders, to include passing riders.
If your caught drafting a warning or penalty my be enforced. Penalties
include but are not limited to disqualification for that day, for
entire series, and public flogging.
Q: What about weather conditions?
A:
We will hold the event in sunshine, overcast, partly cloudy, gloomy,
and light rain conditions. We will not hold event in the case of
blizzards, thunderstorms, lightening, hail, or extreme wind
conditions. Anything in between check the website, we'll have
something posted there there as quick as we can.
Q: Do I need any special equipment?
A: Yep. A bicycle and a helmet. You'll look pretty silly with only one of the two.
