Following a fair result (approximately
8th place or mid-pack) in the Rose Festival criterium in State Center,
IA the night before, I was determined to do a lot better in this race.
The weather was perfect, mostly sunny, mid 80's, mild wind. Scheduled
for 30 minutes plus 3 laps there were twenty one racers who started the
race. I (Ben Acree) was the only FD Trisporter contesting the race. I
was feeling really quite good. I started off the first lap at the
front, wanted to get things going at a moderate speed, get through the
first 180 degree turn ahead of the bunch and safely. Did not want to
burn too much energy. There were multiple racers launching off the
front having a go for a solo effort. I jumped on most of them. A
racer with a Zoom kit launched off. I, thinking he was a triathlete
with his calf marked either with a tattoo or marking from a recent tri,
jumped on his wheel thinking he might be able to time trial well and we
might have a chance of staying away. That did not last long. There
were multiple launches from the Rasmussen team, who had 3-4 riders
representing. The demonstrated nice strategy with their launching
riders, then quickly blocking with a second rider. I realized this
tactic from the get go and quick jumped around hoping I would be the
only one and we might be able to stay away. It never really happened.
I stayed at the front, of now the relatively small group now, for most
of the race. I was able to make it through the 180 degree turns quite
comfortable and gain a few positions each time. With 2 laps to go,
things slowed a little with every one waiting for a move. I went
through in 2nd or 3rd position through the second to last 180 degree
turn, keeping an eye for any jump. Pretty sure it was a Rassy rider.
I jumped on, pretty much at full sprint. Just before the last turn,
got up to 2nd position, right behind Tony Muse of Rasmussen's. At
this point, heart is pounding, not only from the effort but from the
nerves of the final line coming at you. As soon as I got around the
corner I hit the gas as hard as I could. The line came quick, but not
quick enough. I could not catch Tony M. and actually did what you are
never ever supposed to do and just before the line, looked over my
shoulder a little and let up just enough to have another Rasy rider
nip me at the line. Man, I will NEVER do that again. I ended up
placing 3rd and taking home a sweet trophy (like this better than
cash), $20 gift certificate and month membership to Aspen Fitness Club
in Des Moines. There were plenty of primes offered throughout the
race. I managed to win two of them along the way. I won a water
bottle, t-shirt and a nice pair of sunglasses.
(14.8 miles / 37 minutes / 23.6 avg. speed) -Ben Acree

Hy-Vee Triathlon
Congratulations to all the athletes from Fort Dodge who participated in the Hy-Vee Triathlon. As many of you may know, the triathlon was shortened from olympic distance to a sprint distance secondary to bad weather. Click here for results search, can type in bib number, name or town for searching criteria. Here are the FD Trisport member results.
Travis Jass finished 21st & Eric Knox finished 43rd (out of 64). For full results, click here.
Snake Alley Criterium
Travis Jass took the last money placing of 15th place with Eric Knox finishing 34th out of 67 racers. The category 4 race started at 1pm with the temperature reading 91 degrees. It was brutally hot. For full results, click here.
State Fair Criterium
Full results and more pics coming soon. It was a nice day for racing. Glad the rain held off. Wanted to post this pic to show the jerseys. The race was held on the Iowa State Fairgrounds and the course was quite the roller coaster. Preliminary results are Travis Jass 4th place, Eric Knox 9th place and Ben Acree 15th place.
There was a kids race today at the state fairgrounds. The
FD Trisport junior contingent made a strong showing and had a good
time. The course for them was a straight shot and pretty much a drag
race uphill. Each got a
ribbon for their efforts.
Ashton on his way to his first win.

Travis Jass Takes 3rd in large field at Twin Bing Road Race
We were greeted in the aptly named Climbing Hill, Iowa with beautiful
sunshine and upper 60 temps but a pretty strong breeze that played a
large factor throughout. The day is broken down into an "A" race and a
"B" race, A's being Category 1,2, & 3's, and B's being 3, 4, and
5's. I am not certain how the 3's get to choose which race. 70 riders
lined up in the B race that took off at 11:15 for two laps, 45 miles,
on the very rolling course. We were blown out of town by strong
tailwind, and as long as we had the tailwind, the pace was very high
and the field stayed together. One rider flatted in coming out of a
downhill turn and in the following straight two riders got into one
another and went down on the inside of the lane. Never a good sound,
carbon and skin hitting the pavement at 25+ mph. The headwind hit us
at the same time the constantly rolling ground did. At that point
everyone kinda got settled in. I finished the first lap kinda hanging
out in the back, trying to do as little as possible to stay with the
main group, as riders now and again would pop out behind. The field
started narrowing a bit more down to 25-30 riders by the time we got
through the very fast downhill/tailwinds section starting the
second/final lap. I found myself caught behind a bobber threatening to
take me out of the back with him, so I got a bit lucky and timed a
little acceleration into a crosswind that got me safely into the middle
of the back, only to see that 4 riders were maybe 15 seconds up the
road. I didn't think much of it we still had 15 or so miles to go and
there were more of us than them. The "more of us" slowly fell apart to
a couple different groups that were whittled down to only a handful of
riders. I made the "front" group of riders where a Rassy guy was
really taking control. He kept everyone working and staying together.
One rider fell back out of the lead 4 and was with our group for a
short while until he wouldn't work on the front so after some yelling
from the Rassy guy, he made his way into the second chase group. A
couple more miles go by and another rider dropped from the leaders,
leaving them down to two. When our group caught him he was pretty much
blown up but relayed to us the leaders were tiring. For the final
crosswind stretch south towards town we just kinda put our heads down
and worked very hard and well together as 4 riders with one more
suffering alot just to suck our wheels. As we were nearing the end of
the stretch one of the two leaders was coming back to us. The Rassy
guy instructed us to hit the gas when we came upon him so he couldn't
get on with us. We did just that and onto the finishing road we went
with a tailwind for help. The finish was about 2 or so miles outside
of town on top of a hill. We drilled the pace to the bottom of the
first little hill where I kinda got stuck on the front about halfway
up. The road flattens out a bit before the final hill, so I just kinda
recovered a bit knowing no one would take over pulling. At the bottom of the hill,
I put everything I had left into the climb, about halfway up a DMOS
rider went out around me and when he had about half a bike legnth on
me, I heard a groan from behind. I just kept as steady as I could
knowing I had no chance of catching the DMOS guy but tried to keep my
own position. The road was marked at 200m to go, I looked down to see
if there was a wheel behind me and to my surprise there wasn't. I sat
up and looked back to see the Rassy guy had dropped back quite a bit.
Very pleased with 3rd. As we cooled down we all thanked the Rassy guy
for being our drill sargent and biggest cheerleader all in one, without
his direction and encouragement, I personally don't think the chase
would have succeded. Turns out, when there were just the two leaders,
they crossed wheels and the eventual winner hit the deck, had to get
his chain back on, and cross the road to get his sunglasses. He chased
and passed the other leader and solo'd the rest of the way. All in
all, a great day of racing and I gained some good experiance in a
successful chase group. Full results are here although I am not sure
how accurate they are after the first 15 or so places: http://www.siouxcityvelo.com/?q=node/1702

Travis Jass closer to securing State Roller Race Champ Title
Travis won his 5th consecutive roller race in Ames on Sunday Feb 21st with a 5:07 time. Very impressive yet again.
Good times (both kinds) and good company. Roller racing at it's best.
Thanks
to everyone who came to race, Greg & crew for bringing the roller
party to Ames, Dick for officiating, and especially my way better half,
Leanne, for taking care of all that messy detail stuff.
The
rollers ran fast today. The 5 minute "barrier" is overrun twice, four
racers run under 5:10, and the men's overall, Cat 3 and Masters 40+
records fell today. WOW!
See you in Kalona.

Travis' take on the roller race: Here are the results from Sunday, darn good turnout, darn fast racin.
Loomis and Cassaday went against each other for the fastest side by
side ever. Was very fun to watch history be made with the first and
second EVER sub-5 minute times. My time was alright, was hoping for a bit
better. I noticed while warming up that my HR was elevated a bit.
Probably from excitement of just seeing 5 min get broke. As I got
going, I was spending more time watching heart rate and mentally
contrasting the higher number against how I felt instead of paying
attention to a slightly higher cadence for the first 3/4 of the race.
With about a minute to go I shifted up/cadence down and it started
clicking a bit better. Too little too late at that point. Avg hr 184
max 192 Avg cadence 93. First 4 mins cadence 95 last min 89 rpms. Avg
speed 23.3. Got pic on cell phone in Shimkat parade t shirt. Want do better next week if we make it, weather sounds ok at this
point and they did travel to our race so I should
reciprocate....definitaley be sporting trisport shirt then.
Travis Jass has 4th win of 2010
Travis Jass is closing in fast on the overall state indoor roller race record time and is putting Fort Dodge and FD Trisport on the cycling circuit radar. Travis' take on the race:
Avg Hr 183 Max 190 Avg cadence 90 avg speed of 23.4. Definitely got rpm's
dialed in at 90ish, hr coming up, I miss the power numbers but the
trade off is the lighter wheel. Gonna do Ames on 21st with lighter wheel
and put on my best tires and see what happens. Had pretty fresh legs this
week coming off a recovery week. Sorry pic isn't very good.

Fort Dodge Trisport member Travis Jass has second win for 2010
Well, Saturday January 1/9/10 Travis Jass traveled to Muscatine for the The Harper's Cycling & Fitness Rollerhead 2-mile roller race. Seventeen riders from Fort Dodge, Des Moines, Iowa City, Cedar Falls, Washington, Cedar Rapids and Muscatine participated.
Travis' comment on this race: "Did not get a picture on the podium even though I had on FD Trisport shirt. Only 17 riders
and notice 0 juniors. P/Tap cut out a couple times but numbers were far
different. I used more gear to bring down cadence. Avg heart rate was 178,
cadence of 85, speed on p/tap said 20.5 mph but on computer system
it was 21. 3 or something like that. With faster time, speed had to
have gone up, simple math. Power went up about 12%. Felt like I was
using more legs than last week, but the lungs hurt all the same."

Fort Dodge Trisport member Travis Jass gets his first win for 2010
Travis Jass traveled to Valley West Mall in Des Moines for the Valley West Wipeout Roller Race Promoted by DMCC Race Team (DMOS/RDMB). Travis' comments on the race: "Nothing too much to say about it. Warmup, race. The flywheel sure
makes it feel different. You could coast for a long time with it
there, and DO NOT touch your brakes or you WILL go flying. Avg hr was
179, cadence of 104 speed of 20.7 mph". Great job Travis. Thanks for starting giving Fort Dodge Trisport it's very first win. I have included the times of other riders to show just how fast Travis went.
