The
Inaugural FD Roller Race is in the Books
The inaugural
Fort Dodge Roller Race was held on Sunday January 24th. Racers from Ames, Des
Moines, Cedar Rapids and even Muscatine traveled to Fort Dodge for the event,
which was held in the 70 degree comfort of the beautiful Shimkat Motor Co.
showroom. Two FD Trisport members rode the rollers. Myself (Ben Acree) had a
go at my first roller race as a senior category 4 racer not knowing how much
resistance the rollers and flywheel would provide. I am told the resistance is
equivalent to riding up a 6% grade. A very tough ride to say the least. The
legs and lungs burned something fierce. With plenty of encouragement from fellow
team member Travis Jass as well as other racers, I pushed to a time of 6 minutes
56.9 seconds. An average speed of 16.5 mph yielded an average heart rate of
195, max heart rate of 201 and 141 calories burned. I am now addicted to the 2
mile test of truth and completely motivated to race the next roller race on Feb
7th at
Bikeworld
in Urbandale and shave some serious time off my first time. Fort Dodge
Trisport member Travis Jass continued his win streak making it
3 in a row. He took top honors winning
the senior category 4 classification with an unbelievable time of
5:16.4. This is only 16 seconds off the state record for all
categories. You really had to be there to appreciate this effort, really was
inspiring to watch. So, Travis earned a 3rd win for the Fort Dodge Trisport
team and is in line to take
the state indoor roller race
title for senior category 4's. Not bad!!
Thank you to the Fort
Dodge spectators who showed up to offer the support and encouragement.
A special thank you to the Shimkat Motor Co. and the Shimkat family who
allowed us the use of their beautiful showroom for this event.
